The Dowagiac Union School District reflects the diverse community
it serves, as pride and self-reliance have shaped its rich heritage
and continues to develop its future. The district is large enough
to provide numerous educational
opportunities, yet small enough to offer students the individual attention
they deserve.
The Board of Education and its employees believe every student can
learn regardless of family background, socio-economic status, race
or gender. As such, their goal is to educate students to their maximum
potential, while fostering positive behavior and attitudes. As a result,
Dowagiac graduates lead productive, meaningful lives.
The district also believes if Dowagiac graduates are to compete in
today's workforce and global economy, they must be competent users
of technology. As such, technology is part of the total school program,
including curriculum, instruction, learning and management. |

Dowagiac Union Schools employs 162 full-time certified staff, 91
of whom have masters degrees. The average number of years teaching
experience is 15 years. The district's 17 administrators have a
combined experience of more than 300 years.
The
district, which encompasses 170 square miles, has a K-12 enrollment
of 2,650. It also offers adult education, pre-school classes and
dual-enrollment programs that allow students to earn both high school
and college credit. From 2001 to 2006, seventy-six percent of Dowagiac
graduates attended college, trade school or entered the military.
During that same time, they earned an average of $534,638 in college
scholarships.
In 2006 Dowagiac was named an "Outperforming School District" by Standard & Poors. Dowagiac received the honor by achieving statistically higher levels of student achievement than their peers for at least two years. In 2007, a Dowagiac senior was the first-ever in the district to be named a Scholar-Athlete ~ one of only 30 in the State of Michigan.
Dowagiac youth also enjoy opportunities beyond the classroom. Fifty-nine
percent of the students in grades 7-12 participate in extra-curricular
activities such as band, clubs and athletics.
Each of the district's K-12 buildings have active Parent Organizations,
with booster clubs at the high school level for academics, band
and athletics. School Improvement Teams bring together parents and
staff to collaboratively develop building goals.
In addition to the Dowagiac Union Schools, other educational opportunities
are available through two private parochial schools:
Calvary Bible Academy
St. John's Lutheran School
