Dowagiac's
central business district is the home of Beckwith Theatre Co., which
brings to The Grand Old City live theatre at its very best. Evening
and matinee performances are held within an historic 1925 Neo-Gothic
building.
Formed in 1990, Beckwith Theatre Co. is a volunteer, non-profit
organization, dedicated to the performing arts. Its productions
include dramas, comedies, musicals and even a bit of Shakespeare.
The modern-day theatre company takes its name from Beckwith Memorial
Theatre, once located at the corner of Beeson and Front streets.
Built in 1892, it was regarded as one of the finest theatres between
New York and Chicago, playing host to such well-known names as William
S. Hart, Roland Reed, Robert Mantell, Otis Skinner and John Philip
Sousa.
Beckwith Theatre Co., which is a member business of the Greater
Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce, is located at 100 New York Avenue.
