Volunteers work side-by-side with American Cancer Society staff in communities throughout our Great Lakes Division to help achieve the society's goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Volunteers deliver cancer prevention programs, implement detection and awareness campaigns, provide services to patients and their families, organize fundraising events, and advocate for sound public health policies.
American Cancer Society volunteers come from all walks of life, ranging from school-age children to senior citizens ~ all of whom have a variety of skills and backgrounds. They do, however, have one thing in common. They want to make an impact in the fight against cancer.

Now in its 19th year, the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival brings the best in fine arts to Michigan. The week-long festival in mid-May is a Dowagiac tradition, which each year features nationally-recognized visual and performing artists, and authors. Venues across the city feature visual arts, music, literature, theatre, storytelling, and master classes with selected artists.

The Dowagiac District Library also provides the public with Internet access, word processing, fax and copy machines, and micofilm of local newspapers and genealogical resources.
Residents, who live within its service area, may obtain a library card, which allows them to check out print and audio books, videos and magazines. The facility is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Encore Dance Company's mission as a non-profit organization is to develop inter-discipline and integrity in youth through the performing arts. Classes are offered for ages three through adult. Instruction includes: jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, creative movement, kinderdance, liturgical and lyrical, hula and improv.
Among Encore's most popular performances is Christmas Around the World, which is presented in mid-December. This is a must-see holiday production for all ages. Dancing elves and reindeer are joined by life-size toys that spring to life. Under the direction of artistic director Amy Rose, international dance styles are combined with guest vocalists and instrumentalists. This dance extravaganza promises to be an annual highlight of the season.

Peninsular Lodge No. 10, a Masonic fraternal organization, continues the long history of Freemasonry in Dowagiac. A Masonic lodge was established in this city in 1855 and has been active in the community since that time. The lodge is located in the Masonic Center in the heart of beautiful downtown Dowagiac, a location it has occupied since 1936.
Lodge business meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to its fraternal activities, the lodge is active in the community in the following ways: organizing Dowagiac's annual Memorial Day Parade and remembrance; providing scholarships for high school and college students; co-sponsoring two annaul Red Cross blood drives; providing volunteers to assist with a local Halloween party; and maintaining a nature trail at an elementary school.
