Peninsular Lodge No. 10, a Masonic fraternal organization, continues the long history of Freemasonry in Dowagiac. A Masonic lodge was established in this city in 1855 and has been active in the community since that time. The lodge is located in the Masonic Center in the heart of beautiful downtown Dowagiac, a location it has occupied since 1936.
Lodge business meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to its fraternal activities, the lodge is active in the community in the following ways: organizing Dowagiac's annual Memorial Day Parade and remembrance; providing scholarships for high school and college students; co-sponsoring two annaul Red Cross blood drives; providing volunteers to assist with a local Halloween party; and maintaining a nature trail at an elementary school.

State Rep. John Proos of St. Joseph was elected to the Michigan House in November 2004 to represent the 79th district in northern Berrien County. During the past 10 years, Rep. Proos has worked on the staff of Congressman Fred Upton serving in several different capacities, most recently as deputy chief of staff and district director. He also worked as vice president of Heritage Homes Inc. of Michigan in Berrien County.
In addition to working for Congressman Upton, Rep. Proos has served as Berrien County Republican Party Chairman and has been a member of the Berrien County Republicans. He was also a member of the Berrien County Election Staff for the Bush/Cheney campaign in 2000 and is a member of the Lakeland Regional Health System Community Benefits Committee.
Rep. Proos was appointed to the House Appropriations Committee for the 2009-2010 Legislative Session. He is serving as Minority Vice Chair of the Corrections and Human Services Subcommittees and is a member of the Joint Capital Outlay Committee and House Energy and Technology Committee.
